本經與《增壹阿含經》第45品第3經及南傳巴利語佛經《中部》第17經的內容相同。

    所謂「良禽擇木而居」,孟母也會為了孟子的教育而三遷,由此可知環境對一個人的發展與影響何其之大,佛陀在本經也有如是的開示,佛陀以頭陀支的「森林住」為例,如果某森林的物質條件苛刻、艱困與匱乏,但卻有利於比丘的修行,這個比丘可以選擇繼續住下去;反之,就算物質條件良好,但卻很不利於修行,仍應選擇離去。

    我是這樣聽聞的:

    有一次,佛陀在古印度的舍衛國遊方行腳,並暫時住在勝林給孤獨園林之中。

    當時,世尊對諸比丘說:「比丘們,若有比丘依止於一座森林並居住於該林中,一開始他抱持著以下的想法:『我依止於這座荒涼的山林而居住,我未現起的正念將生起,同時未入定的心會入定,未遍滅盡的一切煩惱將滅盡,未抵達的無上安穩涅槃將抵達,還有凡是出家應該得到的生活必需品,比如衣服、施食、臥具、病人需要的物資及醫藥必需品,這些東西都不難取得。』,於是,這個森林比丘便居住在這座森林中。

    但後來這個比丘卻發現一切都事與願違,跟他當初想的不一樣,在這座森林中修行,未現起的正念沒有生起,同時未入定的心沒有入定,未遍滅盡的一切煩惱沒有滅盡,未抵達的無上安穩涅槃沒有抵達,但凡是出家應該得到的生活必需品,比如衣服、施食、臥具、病人需要的物資及醫藥必需品,這些東西對該比丘而言並不難取得。這時,這名比丘應如理思惟,這裡的環境並不適合他繼續修行,因為他沒有辦法在此處更上一層樓,他應該要捨此森林而離去,另覓更適合的修行處所。

    假設,有一個比丘住在森林中修行,他發現未生起的正念已生起,未入定的心已入定,未遍滅盡的一切煩惱已滅盡,未抵達的無上安穩涅槃已抵達,然而,凡是出家應該得到的生活必需品,比如衣服、施食、臥具、病人需要的物資及醫藥必需品,這些物資都非常難取得。也就是說,這名比丘發現雖然周遭的物質條件與環境極其艱困與匱乏,但對於他的修行卻大有助益與精進,因此他可以選擇繼續住在此森林中。

    又假設,有比丘在某座森林中修行,他發現未現起的正念沒有生起,未入定的心沒有入定,未遍滅盡的一切煩惱沒有滅盡,未抵達的無上安穩涅槃沒有抵達,而且凡是出家應該得到的生活必需品,比如衣服、施食、臥具、病人需要的物資及醫藥必需品,這些東西對該比丘而言非常難取得。這時,該比丘應如理思惟,修行也講求天時、地利及人和等因緣,而眼下這座森林對他的修行極其不利,他應立即捨此森林,於夜半時分離去。

    最後,若比丘發現在某森林中修行時,未生起的正念已生起,未入定的心已入定,未遍滅盡的一切煩惱已滅盡,未抵達的無上安穩涅槃已抵達,而且,凡是出家應該得到的生活必需品,比如衣服、施食、臥具、病人需要的物資及醫藥必需品,這些物資都很容易取得。也就是說,這名比丘發現這座森林對他的修行不論主客觀條件都非常有利,那麼他當然可以選擇繼續住在此森林中,一直住到他生命結束的那一天為止。

    森林住是頭陀十三支中的一支,只是一個例子,其餘如塚間住(住在墳場旁),甚或住在村邑中又或者人多的地方也是如此。總之,選擇與考量修行環境的標準是以是否有利於修行解脫道為準繩。」

    當佛陀說完之後,諸比丘都心生歡喜,並依法奉行。

中阿含107經/林經(上)(林品)
  我聞如是:
  一時,佛遊舍衛國,在勝林給孤獨園。
  爾時,世尊告諸比丘:
  「比丘者,依一林住:『我依此林住,或無正念便得正念,其心不定而得定心,若不解脫便得解脫,諸漏不盡而得漏盡,不得無上安隱涅槃則得涅槃,學道者所須衣被、飲食、床榻、湯藥、諸生活具,彼一切求索易不難得。』彼比丘依此林住。依此林住已,若無正念不得正念,其心不定不得定心,若不解脫不得解脫,諸漏不盡不得漏盡,不得無上安隱涅槃,然不得涅槃,學道者所須衣被、飲食、床榻、湯藥、諸生活具,彼一切求索易不難得,彼比丘應作是觀:『我出家學道,不為衣被故,不為飲食、床榻、湯藥故,亦不為諸生活具故,然,我依此林住,或無正念不得正念,其心不定不得定心,若不解脫不得解脫,諸漏不盡不得漏盡,不得無上安隱涅槃,然不得涅槃,學道者所須衣被、飲食、床榻、湯藥、諸生活具,彼一切求索易不難得。』彼比丘如是觀已,可捨此林去。

增壹阿含45品3經
  聞如是:
  一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
  爾時,世尊告諸比丘:
  「若有比丘依村落住,善法消{滅}[減],惡法遂增,彼比丘當作是學:『我今在村落居止,惡法遂增,善法漸減,念不專一,不得盡有漏,不至無為安隱之處,我所得衣被、飲食、床臥具、病瘦醫藥勞苦乃獲。』彼比丘當作是學:『吾今住此村落之中,惡法遂增,善法消{滅}[減],我亦不以衣被、飲食、床臥具、醫藥故,來作沙門,吾所求願者,今不獲果。』又,彼比丘當遠離村落去。
  若復有比丘依村落住,善法增益,惡法消滅,所得衣{裳}[被]、飲食、床臥具勤勞乃獲,彼比丘當作是學:『我今依此村落住,善法增益,惡法消滅,所得供養之具勤勞乃得,{有}[又],我不以衣被故出家學道,修於梵行,我所學道求願者必成其法,應當盡形壽承事供養。』」
  爾時,世尊便說偈曰:
  「衣被及飲食,床{臥}[具]及所安,不應貪著想,亦莫來此世。
   不以衣被故,出家而學道,所以學道者,必果其所願。
   比丘尋應時,盡形住彼村,於彼般涅槃,盡其命根本。
  是時,彼比丘若在人間靜處所遊之村,善法增益,惡法自滅,彼比丘盡形壽住彼村中,不應遠遊。」
  是時,阿難白世尊言:
  「如來常不說四大依食得存,亦依於心所念法?諸善之法依心而生?又,彼比丘依村落住,勞苦精神乃求衣食,彼云何生善法,住彼村落而不遠遊?」
  佛告阿難:
  「衣被、飯食、床臥具、病瘦醫藥有三種,若復比丘專念四事供養,所欲不果,此依是苦。若復興知足之心,不起想著,諸天、人民代其歡喜,又,比丘!當作是學,我由此故而說此義。
  是故,阿難!比丘當念少欲知足。如是,阿難![當作是學。」
  爾時,阿難]聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

Ye ca kho ime pabbajitena jīvitaparikkhārā samudānetabbā– cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajja-parikkhārā– te appakasirena samudāgacchanti. Tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṃ– ‘ahaṃ kho imaṃ puggalaṃ upanissāya viharāmi Tassa me imaṃ puggalaṃ upanissāya viharato anupaṭṭhitā ceva sati upaṭṭhāti, asamāhitañca cittaṃ samādhiyati, aparikkhīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti, ananuppattañca anuttaraṃ yogakkhemaṃ anupāpuṇāmi. Ye ca kho ime pabbajitena jīvitaparikkhārā samudānetabbā– cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārā– te appakasirena samudāgacchantī’ti. Tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā yāvajīvampi so puggalo anubandhitabbo, na pakkamitabbaṃ, api panujjamānenapī”ti.
   Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.
   Vanapatthasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ sattamaṃ.
